Taipei, July 5 (CNA) Taiwanese sisters Latisha Chan and Chan Hao-ching and Taiwan's top-ranked doubles player Hsieh Su-wei all advanced to the quarterfinals of the women's doubles at Wimbledon on Monday.
The Chans, seeded seventh, needed to come from behind to top home favorites Harriet Dart and Heather Watson of Britain 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 in a match that lasted just under two hours.
Not long after, Hsieh, teamed with Elise Mertens of Belgium, outfought Americans Jessica Pegula and Asia Muhammad 7-5, 6-3 in an hour and 10 minutes, giving Taiwan a presence in two of the women's doubles final eight teams.
For the Chan sisters, it is already their best showing at a Grand Slam event this year and the farthest they have ever advanced as a team at Wimbledon.
They appeared in trouble at the end of the first set when, with the score tied at 4-4, the British duo won eight of nine points to grab the lead and the momentum.
But the Chans asserted themselves in the second set, breaking their opponents' serve in the fourth and eighth games to even the match.
The third set was decided when the Taiwanese held serve in the first and seventh games after saving break points to secure their spot in the final eight.
Latisha Chan's best-ever finish at Wimbledon was a quarterfinal showing in 2017 at her peak when she partnered with Martina Hingis.
Chan Hao-ching reached the finals at Wimbledon in 2017 teamed with Monica Niculescu of Romania.
The two will face the winners of the match between 13th seeds Raluca Olaru of Romania and Nadiia Kichenok of Ukraine and the unseeded Caroline Dolehide of the U.S. and Storm Sanders of Australia, which took place later Monday.
Hsieh, who won the women's doubles at Wimbledon in 2013 and 2019, has already advanced further in London than at the Australian Open and French Open played earlier this year.
She and Mertens, seeded third, served for the first set at 5-4 but were broken by the Americans on their third break point. Hsieh and Martens kept their composure, however, and broke right back before serving out the set.
In the second set, the duo broke the 14th-seeded Americans' final three service games to clinch the match.
Hsieh and Martens will face the unseeded Serbian duo of Nina Stojanovic and Aleksandra Krunic for a spot in the final four.
