Taiwan's passport ranked world's 31st 'powerful'

Taipei, July 8 (CNA) Taiwan's passport ranked joint 31st on a list of the world's most powerful passports, offering its holders visa-free access to 146 destinations, according to the Henley Passport Index for the third quarter of 2021 issued Wednesday.

Compared with the second quarter, Taiwan's ranking was up one spot in the latest survey by British consulting firm Henley & Partners.

The latest index includes 199 different passports and 227 different travel destinations.

The 199 passports were ranked based on the number of destinations giving passport holders visa-free access.

In the latest rankings, Taiwan occupied the 31st spot, which it shares with the East African island nation of Mauritius and St. Lucia.

Japan remained top of the list for the fourth consecutive year with the holders of its passport having access to 193 destinations without a visa, followed by Singapore with accessibility to 192 locations and South Korea and Germany tied at third with 191, according to the latest survey.

Hong Kong ranked 18 with access to 171 destinations, Macau 32nd with 145, while China, Namibia and Suriname tied at 72nd with 78, according to the latest list.

Updated quarterly, the Henley Passport Index is compiled based on exclusive data from the International Air Transport Authority (IATA).
