Taipei, July 11 (CNA) Taiwan continued to see a population decline this year, with the number of people dropping by 96,314 year-on year as of the end of June, according to the latest statistics compiled by the Ministry of the Interior (MOI) released earlier this week.

The total population stood at 23.487 million at the end of June, down by 0.41 percent from June 2020, the MOI said.

Taiwan's population experienced negative growth for the first time in 2020, with 165,249 births and 173,156 deaths, according to the previous MOI data.

In the first six months of 2021, the country reported 74,609 births, down by 6.5 percent from the 79,760 recorded during the same period last year.

On the other hand, 93,649 deaths were reported between January and June, up by 5.8 percent from 88,555 during the same period in 2020, MOI data showed.
