Tokyo, July 24 (CNA) World No. 1 female badminton player Tai Tzu-ying (戴資穎) began her campaign at the Tokyo Olympic Games with a straight sets victory in her first match in the group stage of the women's singles Saturday.
Tai beat Sabrina Jaquet of Switzerland 21-7, 21-13 in her first match in Group P, and next faces Nguyen Thuy Linh of Vietnam on Monday.
Nguyen also won her first match, beating the other player in Group P, Qi Xuefei (齊雪霏) of France 21-11, 21-11.
Tai, 27, said she aims to win all the matches in her group of four players to ensure she secures a spot in the quarterfinals, which she failed to do at the past two Summer Games.
Saturday's match helped her get used to the badminton venue and into the right competition mindset, Tai said.
