Appointments for Moderna shots to open to 519,000 people.

Taipei, Aug. 3 (CNA) A total of 519,000 people in Taiwan eligible for a dose of the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine will be able to make online appointments starting Thursday morning, the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC) said Tuesday.

The online system https://1922.gov.tw/vas/ will open from 10 a.m. Thursday to Saturday noon, said Health and Welfare Minister Chen Shih-chung , who heads the CECC.

In the latest registration round, around 68,000 people in the CECC's top three priority groups will be eligible to receive a second shot of the Moderna vaccine 28 days after the first one.

The priority groups include medical personnel, flight crews, employees in other jobs at high risk of COVID-19, and pregnant women, according to the CECC.

Also, around 451,000 seniors aged 65 and above and those aged 55 and above who suffer from rare or serious illnesses or injuries will also be able to make appointments for their first Moderna vaccine jab during the time frame, Chen said.

People who meet the age requirements and have registered their willingness to receive the Moderna vaccine will begin receiving text messages starting at 10 a.m. Thursday, notifying them that they can make an appointment.

This round of Moderna vaccines will be administrated from Aug. 11 to 17.

As of Monday, around 8 million people in Taiwan had received their first shot of a COVID-19 vaccine, which translates into 34 percent of the population, while 403,785, or 1.71 percent, have been fully vaccinated, according to the CECC.

To date, Taiwan has only administered two vaccine brands -- Moderna and AstraZeneca.
