August 16 is Children’s Day in Paraguay. It commemorates the more than 3,000 child soldiers of the Boys Army (6-15 years of age) who tragically gave their live to protect their homes against overwhelming opposition in the Battle of Acosta Ñu.
Barrio San Martin in Villeta City has long been an area that Tzu Chi Asuncion has cared for on a priority basis. This year’s Children’s Day was on a Sunday and Tzu Chi volunteers took the opportunity to take biscuits, sweets, chocolate and toys to Barrio San Martin, spending the special day happily with local children. They also took the chance to go to nearby Isla Ipka’e where living conditions are very basic. As well as taking gifts for local children there, volunteers also visited families with special needs, also presenting two specially made mattresses and mosquito nets to improve basic living conditions.
