Washington, Oct. 12 (CNA) Taiwan and the United States have agreed to continue an economic dialogue launched under the Donald Trump administration, Taiwan's representative office in Washington said Tuesday.

At a meeting between Hsiao Bi-khim (蕭美琴), Taiwan's representative to the U.S., and Jose W. Fernandez, under secretary for Economic Growth, Energy, and the Environment at the State Department, the two sides reached a consensus that holding the dialogue is "necessary for Taiwan-U.S. economic interaction," the office said in a statement.

Both sides agreed to communicate more closely on the dialogue, known as the U.S.-Taiwan Economic Prosperity Partnership (EPP) Dialogue, but no decision was made on when and where the next round of the EPP will be held and in what format, the statement said.

Fernandez said in a tweet that he met with Hsiao "to discuss a wide range of topics in our dynamic economic relationship with Taiwan."

"I look forward to leading the next iteration of the Economic Prosperity Partnership Dialogue with Taiwan," he said.

Hsiao responded on Twitter that she was pleased to have the opportunity to meet with Fernandez and go over many important matters relevant to the bilateral economic relationship.

"Look forward to the EPPD and a stronger partnership in the near future," she tweeted.

The inaugural EPP dialogue, held in Washington in November 2020, covered a broad range of economic issues, including 5G networks and telecommunications security, supply chains, renewable energy, and global health.

The U.S delegation was headed by then-under secretary of state for Economic Growth, Energy, and the Environment Keith Krach, while the Taiwanese delegation was led by Deputy Economic Affairs Minister Chen Chern-chyi (陳政祺).

The dialogue is the highest-level mechanism to date for Taiwan-U.S. economic exchanges and cooperation, according to the office.
