London, Nov. 3 (CNA) China Airlines (CAL) and EVA Airways, two of Taiwan's largest carriers, will resume direct flights between Taipei and London from December.
The resumption comes after flights were temporarily suspended in June following a steep rise in the number of Delta variant COVID-19 cases reported in the U.K.
CAL and EVA Airways' London offices announced the news Wednesday during the World Travel Market (WTM) trade show in London.
WTM, which was held from Nov. 1-3, also hosted a special pavilion organized by the London office of Taiwan's Tourism Bureau.
The pavilion shared information about Taiwanese culture, cuisine and travel with attendees, with Sylvia Lee (李思賢), director of the London office, saying that Taiwan's success in dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic had helped increase interest in country.
During the three-day trade event, Lee said the pavilion had received many inquiries about the availability of vacation packages and customized tours in Taiwan centered around cycling, hiking, diving and birdwatching.
Despite an abundance of tourism resources, many foreigners still didn't know enough about Taiwan, she explained.
"They also had no idea that there are many high mountains over 3,000 meters in Taiwan," the London office director said.
The opening of the bureau's London office in December 2019 came at an unfortunate time for the travel sector, with many international flights canceled as COVID-19 began spreading across the globe.
