On November 14 a group of white-trousered blue-shirted students were gathered together. They were Tzu Chi youth volunteers from the Sacramento area who had been awarded the President's Volunteer Service Award and were about to receive the certificate and letter of thanks signed by President Biden and medal.
Recipients of The President's Volunteer Service Award must be US citizens or legal residents and must have completed a high number of community service hours in a year. Many parents worry that spending so much time on volunteer service will affect their child’s school grades. In an interview, however, one parent said they fully support their child’s volunteering and often take them to experience the outside world and serve the community. She said that when doing public benefit service their child doesn’t only consider their own benefit, is willing to give to others and happy to help others. She said that she found that her child using spare time to do volunteer work reduces the time they spend online or watching TV and makes them able to manage time more efficiently, so they help others and also help themselves by volunteering.
