Taipei, Nov. 23 (CNA) Taoyuan International Airport Corp. (TIAC) announced Tuesday that it will introduce the "One ID" facial recognition system on a trial basis next month to reduce waiting times for passengers.

The "One ID" system, which has been promoted by the International Air Transport Association since 2019, will be first introduced for one China Airlines and EVA Airways flight per day at the airport's Terminal 2 from Dec. 1-14, the company said.

The introduction of the system based on identity management and biometric recognition is partly a preventive measure against the COVID-19 pandemic but also preparation for the post-pandemic era.

The new process involves passengers having their face scanned and presenting a passport at either check-in or the later security check. Those facial images will then be stored in a database, according to the company.

During the first two-week period, passengers will still need to present their passport for immigration checks, but not before boarding the plane, at boarding gates C6 and D5, where their facial features will be compared to those in the database, TIAC President Jerry Dan (但昭璧) explained.

Data collected in the process will only be used to check the identity of passengers during the journey and will be transmitted to a closed VPN network, from which it will be deleted after the flight takes off, said Dan.

A larger trial will take place from Dec. 15 to the end of August 2022 at Terminal 2 including more flights and more boarding gates, the company said, without providing much detail.

Ahead of the planned trial period, a test involving over 100 people was held at the airport Tuesday, which yielded satisfactory results, Dan told media.
