Taiwan podcast audience increased more than 200% in 2021: report

Taipei, Jan. 17 (CNA) The audience for podcasts produced in Taiwan increased by 200 percent last year from a year earlier, according to a 2021 report published Monday by SoundOn, a Taiwan-based podcast startup.

On average, each podcast program saw a 160 percent year-on-year increase in listeners and each listener donated an average of NT$335 (US$12.16), according to the report.

The average podcast episode length is about 27 minutes, and the number of podcast programs that average 30 minutes or less per episode account for 62 percent of the total, including 40 percent with content of 11-30 minutes and 22 percent of 1-10 minutes.

Most of the programs launched last year were in the society/culture and education categories, accounting for 30 percent of newly added programs last year, according to the report.

In terms of podcast donation revenue, 46 percent of programs with total donations of more than NT$10,000 have fewer than 1,000 listeners, the report said.

Programs in the society/culture, comedy music and education categories received most donations, according to the report.
