China will ramp up pressure on Taiwan through hybrid threats: NSB

Taipei, March 11 (CNA) China intends to take advantage of the war between Russia and Ukraine to increase its pressure on Taiwan through hybrid threats, the National Security Bureau (NSB) warned Thursday.

The hybrid threats will comprise not only China's military coercion, but its continued united front tactics and cognitive warfare to spread disinformation and penetrate Taiwan's society, the NSB said a report that analyzed the Russia-Ukraine war and its possible effects on cross-Taiwan Strait affairs.

Other forms of intimidation by China will include cyberattacks, the NSB said in the report that was submitted to the Legislature's National Defense and Foreign Affairs Committee.

Some of the threats coming out of Beijing are attempts to sway public opinion and destroy morale in Taiwan, in addition to depleting Taiwan's national defense resources, said the NSB, Taiwan's top intelligence agency.

Regarding the Russia-Ukraine war, the NSB said Moscow's primary goal is to capture Kyiv, and its second objective is to secure a stronghold in major cities across eastern and southern Ukraine.

Ukraine, however, is not only putting up military resistance, but it is also carrying out cyberwarfare and cognitive operations against Russia's aggression, while seeking international help, the report said.

The NSB said it will continue to pay close attention to the Russia-Ukraine conflict, which provides information that may be useful to Taiwan's government in its decision- and policy-making efforts.
