Taipei, April 20 (CNA) The new Saint Lucian ambassador to Taiwan, Robert Kennedy Lewis, said Wednesday he will work to promote links between the people of the two countries, according to Taiwan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA).
At a ceremony held at the ministry Wednesday morning, the Caribbean ambassador presented a copy of his letter of credentials to Foreign Minister Joseph Wu (吳釗燮) and said he would dedicate his time in Taiwan to promoting exchanges between the people of Taiwan and Saint Lucia, especially in the field of education, MOFA said in a statement.
The two also exchanged views on bilateral cooperation, Taiwan's efforts to take part in the international community and the current situation in the Taiwan Strait, the statement said.
Wu said the relationship between Taiwan and Saint Lucia is close and amicable, and he thanked the Caribbean ally for having long voiced its support for Taiwan's participation in international organizations.
According to MOFA, the new ambassador was educated in Britain and New Zealand, where he received his doctoral degree in mathematics from the University of Otago. Before taking on his new role, Lewis served as minister for Education, Human Resource Development and Labor and was elected to the House of Assembly of Saint Lucia in 2006.
The Republic of China, the official name of Taiwan, first established diplomatic relations with Saint Lucia in 1984, but ties were severed in 1997 and later restored in 2007.
