Taipei, May 9 (CNA) People First Party (PFP) Secretary-General Lee Hung-chun (李鴻鈞) was nominated by President Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文) on Monday to serve as the vice president of the Control Yuan -- Taiwan's highest watchdog body of government agencies and officials.
Lee's nomination has been sent to the Legislature for its review and approval, ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) caucus whip Ker Chien-ming (柯建銘) said.
Lee, 62, a Japan expert and a veteran politician, served five consecutive terms as Legislator from 2002-2020.
The Control Yuan, which is responsible for investigating and disciplining public servants and agencies, has 29 members, including a president and a vice president, which are appointed by Taiwan's president and confirmed by the Legislative Yuan every six years.
Later on Monday, Lee said he was resigning as PFP secretary-general and will quit the party and withdraw from all political activities.
The Control Yuan vice president post has been vacant since 2020, when Tsai's nomination of Justin Huang (黃健庭), a former Taitung County magistrate from the main opposition Kuomintang (KMT), was criticized by both the DPP and KMT.
Huang then withdrew from consideration and later became the KMT's secretary-general in 2021.
