Taipei, Aug. 6 (CNA) Taiwan's finest and bravest put on a mighty show to clinch a total of 44 gold, 28 silver, and 24 bronze medals at the 2022 World Police and Fire Games in the Netherlands, according to Taiwan's National Police Agency (NPA) on Saturday.

A total of 18 police officers and eight firefighters from Taiwan were among the roughly 10,000 competitors from around 66 countries that competed in the 19th edition of the international sporting event for first responders from July 22-31 in Rotterdam, the NPA said.

The Taiwan delegation's impressive performance included pocketing 11 gold, eight silver, and seven bronze medals in judo and jiu jitsu newasa, while also bagging five gold, four silver, and nine bronze medals in taekwondo and karate, the NPA said.

The Taiwan team also picked up 11 gold, four silver, and two bronze medals in the shooting categories, the NPA added.

A total of 44 gold, 28 silver, and 24 bronze medals were won by the team, which returned to Taiwan on Aug. 2, the NPA said.

The World Police and Fire Games uses sport "as a means of establishing encounters between first responders" and aims to "stimulate sportsmanship and to generate respect for" emergency workers, its website stated.

Taiwan has been participating in the event since its eighth edition in 1999, according to the NPA.
