Taipei, Aug. 14 (CNA) China deployed 22 warplanes and six warships into areas around Taiwan as of 5 p.m. Sunday, with 10 of the 22 aircraft crossing the median line of the Taiwan Strait, according to the Ministry of National Defense (MND).
The 10 aircraft consisted of four Sukhoi SU-30 fighter jets, two Chengdu J-10 fighter jets, two Shenyang J-11 fighter jets and two Shenyang J-16 fighter jets, while a Shaanxi KJ-500 early warning and control aircraft entered the southwestern part of Taiwan's air defense identification zone (ADIZ), the MND said.
In response, Taiwan monitored the situation with combat air patrols, naval vessels and land-based missile systems, the ministry said.
The median line was previously treated as an unofficial border on both sides of the Taiwan Strait, for which reason breaching it represents a more aggressive posture than Beijing's frequent sorties into Taipei's ADIZ over the past two years.
Beijing has made similar deployments every day since Aug. 4, when it launched live-fire military drills in six maritime zones around Taiwan.
The maneuvers came just after U.S. House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi concluded a 19-hour visit to Taiwan on Aug. 3.
