Taipei, Aug. 19 (CNA) The average life expectancy in Taiwan fell slightly in 2021 as the crude death rate took a sudden jump during the year, the Ministry of the Interior (MOI) said Friday.
Average life expectancy was 80.86 years in 2021, down by 0.46 years compared with 2020, as deaths in 2021 rose to 184,457 from 173,162 the previous year and the crude death rate jumped to 7.86 from 7.34 a year earlier, according to MOI figures.
The average life expectancy at birth for men and women in 2021 was estimated at 77.67 years and 84.25 years, respectively, down 0.44 years and 0.50 years from the previous year.
The jump in deaths led to a 3.8 percent rise in the standardized mortality ratio (SMR), a key metric in life expectancy that adjusts for the age structure of a population.
An SMR higher than 1 indicates that more deaths occurred than would have been expected based on the age distribution of Taiwan's population, a sign of excess deaths in the population in 2021, likely related in part to deaths related to COVID-19.
According to the MOI, the average life expectancy drops for a particular year when the SMR goes up, as it also did in 2014 and 2016.
Overall, however, average life expectancy in Taiwan has steadily risen over the past decade, from 79.15 years in 2011 to 80.86 in 2021, the MOI statement said.
According to the MOI data, Taipei had the highest average life expectancy in 2021 across Taiwan's six major municipalities at 84.17 years, followed by New Taipei's 81.74, Taoyuan's 81.35, Taichung's 81.13, Tainan's 80.55 and Kaohsiung's 79.96.
The eastern county of Taitung had the lowest life expectancy of any of Taiwan's 22 cities and counties at 76.64 years.
