It is more than 30 years since New York Taiwanese groups began campaigning in support of Taiwan’s entry into the UN. After a two-year break due to COVID-19, on September 17, during the UN General Assembly, Taiwanese-Americans in the Eastern US enthusiastically answered the call of groups including the Taiwanese American Council of Greater New York, Taiwanese American Association of New York and Keep Taiwan Free; more than 250 people from Washington DC, Philadelphia, Connecticut and other places took to the streets of Manhattan to express the deep desire of 23.5 million Taiwanese to join the UN to join the UN to New Yorkers and the UN. They were supported by the applause of many people on the route.
The organizing group said that for many years, people from Taiwan living overseas have not given up hope of being admitted to the UN and they hold activities annually to increase local influence and enhance international support for Taiwan: “One person’s voice may be a whisper, but when we can tell the world together that Taiwan deserves to be in the UN we will be heard.”
