Taipei, Sept. 25 (CNA) Taiwan reported 38,980 new infections of COVID-19 and 34 deaths from the disease Sunday, according to the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC).

The 34 deaths, which brought the total in Taiwan since the pandemic began to 10,828, were among people in their 30s to 90s, and all but two had underlying health issues such as cardiovascular diseases and stroke, the CECC said.

Sixteen of them were unvaccinated against COVID-19, while five had received one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine, six had gotten two shots, and seven had received three doses.

Also on Sunday, the CECC reported 51 new cases classified as "severe" and 172 new cases classified as "moderate."

Among the severe cases were four involving multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children, the CECC said.

Regional breakdown

Regionally, New Taipei reported the highest number of new cases Sunday, with 8,016, followed by Taichung with 5,028, Taipei with 4,370, Taoyuan with 4,098, Kaohsiung with 3,733, and Tainan with 2,451, the CECC said in a statement.

Changhua County had 2,036 new cases, Hsinchu County 1,043, Hsinchu City 1,006, Pingtung County 958, Yilan County 953, Miaoli County 853, Yunlin County 823, Keelung 739, and Nantou County 689.

Chiayi County had 568 cases, Hualien County 476, Chiayi City 370, Taitung County 286, Kinmen County 160, Penghu County 108, and the Matsu Islands 21, the CECC said.

To date, Taiwan has recorded 6,250,051 COVID-19 cases since the pandemic began in early 2020, including 33,763 cases classified as "imported" because they were deemed to have originated abroad.
