The 2022 H.O.T. Islands Music Festival will kick off on Sep. 24 in Taitung, featuring artists from Hualien, Okinawa, and Taitung. Organized by the National Taitung Living Art Center, the music festival has taken place annually in Taiwan or Japan since 2014, with both countries taking turns to host the festival, to allow audiences to better understand the music of both nations.

Furthermore, it also connects musicians from the two regions by inviting them to indigenous villages for a music and cultural exchange. This year, the lineup of the music festival includes indigenous musicians Andung (安懂), Tonya (塘芽), Amis Polyphonic Youth Band (阿美族複音青春歌隊), and a group of Sikawasay from the Amis Lidaw tribe; as well as Ayumi Sakuraba (櫻庭步), Yui Matayoshi (又吉佑衣) and Naoki Asami (淺見直樹) from Okinawa. The live performance will be streamed online for more audiences to enjoy the show virtually.

During their visit, Okinawan musicians will visit indigenous villages and experience various activities such as the Puyuma wood carving and culinary delights at the Kasavakan village in Zhiben, Taitung; learn more about the traditional ritual practice among Amis tribes in Ji'an Township, Hualien; and participate in a music workshop at the National Dong Hwa University, with an aim to strengthen ties between artists from Taiwan and Okinawa.

Unaffected by the pandemic, Taiwan and Okinawa have maintained mutual cultural exchanges in various forms such as online and in-person music festivals. For more information, please visit the official website and Facebook page of the H.O.T. Islands Music Festival.
