The first UN General Assembly since the outbreak of COVID-19 was held September 19-23, 2022. Following the march on the streets of Manhattan by almost 300 Taiwanese-Americans on September 17, speaking out for Taiwan through a march and banner pulled by a light aircraft, on September 23 Taiwanese-Americans followed up by sailing a boat past the UN, sending the message that Taiwan should be allowed to enter the UN straight to the heart of the UN.
Since the 1970s, Taiwanese overseas have used various means to call on the international community to not exclude Taiwan due to pressure from China; from 1992, Taiwanese-Americans living in New York have advocated Taiwan’s participation in the international community with the slogan “UN for Taiwan”.
