London, Oct. 12 (CNA) 43 universities in Taiwan have been included in the World University Rankings 2023, the U.K.-based Times Higher Education (THE) announced Wednesday.
According to THE, the latest list has the most Taiwan universities on it in the rankings' 19-year history.
Of the 43 Taiwan institutions, Chinese Culture University, National Formosa University, and National Kaohsiung University of Science and Technology made the rankings for the first time.
National Taiwan University (NTU) continued to lead the pack of Taiwanese institutions in the rankings but fell 74 places from its 113 placement last year to its current rank at 187.
Following NTU, the top 10 Taiwanese institutions in the rankings in descending order were: China Medical University, Taipei Medical University, Asia University, National Tsing Hua University, National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University, National Cheng Kung University, National Taiwan University of Science and Technology, National Yunlin University of Science and Technology and National Sun Yat-sen University.
Of Taiwan's top 10 on the list, only NTU made it into the world's top 200 universities.
THE Editorial Director Phil Baty said as a whole, Taiwan performed relatively outstandingly considering the number of universities climbing up the rankings.
The 2023 edition of the World University Rankings included 1,799 higher-learning institutions in 104 countries around the world, which was 137 more than last year and the most universities assessed since the list was first published.
The top 10 spots on the list in descending order, meanwhile, are dominated by institutions in the United Kingdom and the United States: University of Oxford; University of Cambridge; Stanford University; Massachusetts Institute of Technology; California Institute of Technology; Princeton University; University of California, Berkeley; Yale University; and Imperial College London.
THE disclosed that while the U.S. continued to occupy the top spots on the rankings alongside the U.K., the number of U.S. schools on the list continued to drop annually.
The number of U.S. schools in the rankings peaked 2018, with 43, with 2023 seeing the fewest with 34.
