Taiwan's Chiang wins second gold at Asian U18 Athletics Championships

Taipei, Oct. 17 (CNA) Taiwan's Chiang Jing-yuan (江靜緣) topped the girls' shot put at the 4th Asian U18 Athletics Championships on Sunday in Kuwait, collecting her second gold at the tournament.

The 15-year-old won gold in the event with 17.82 meters, defeating Park Sojin of South Korea and Elaheh Alizadeh of Iran who had achieved 16.89m and 14.92m, respectively, at Kuwait's Al Kuwait Kaifan Stadium.

Chiang's result of 17.82 meters broke Taiwan's U18 girls' record of 17.02 m, which was also set by her at the National Athletics Age Group Meet in Taoyuan City on Sept. 23.

Sunday's victory was Chiang's second gold at the tournament; she collected Taiwan's first gold by winning the girls discus throw on Friday, producing a career-best result of 45.42m.

In total, Taiwan has snagged six gold, one silver, and two bronze medals at the tournament.

Also clinching gold for Taiwan were Hsieh Yuan-kai (謝元愷), who topped the 110-meter boy's hurdles with a time of 13.65 seconds, and Huang Chao-hung (黃潮鴻), who won the boy's javelin throw category by recording a stunning 80.40m in his fourth attempt.

Another Taiwanese gold medal winner was Lin Yan-kai (林硯楷), who finished first in the boys' 400 meters hurdles in a time of 52.23 seconds, while Chu Pin-hsun (朱品薰) also snagged gold on Sunday, with a throw of 52.7m in the girl's javelin event.

Meanwhile, 17-year-old Taiwanese Li Po-jui (李柏睿) took silver for recording a result of 10.73 seconds in the boys 100-meter event, while Irene-li Lai (賴尹甯) clinched bronze in the girls 100m hurdles for finishing in 14.24 seconds.

Another Taiwanese medalist was Yi Po-an (易柏安), who took bronze in the women's 400m hurdles, clocking 62.4 seconds.

The 4th Asian U18 Athletics Championships, held Oct. 13-16 in Kuwait, saw some 400 young athletes and staff team members from 30 Asian countries take part in around 40 sports events.

The 5th Asian Youth Athletics Champions is going to be held in Tashkent, Uzbekistan in April next year, according to the Asian Athletics Association.
