Taipei, Nov. 6 (CNA) The new prime minister of St. Kitts and Nevis, Terrence Drew, will lead a delegation to Taiwan from Monday to Thursday, marking his first trip to the country since becoming the political leader of the Caribbean ally this August, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA).

To welcome Drew and his delegation, President Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文) will hold a military salute, and both sides will exchange views on bilateral cooperation projects and topics of mutual interest in the Presidential Office, MOFA said in a press release.

Drew will also meet with Premier Su Tseng-chang (蘇貞昌) and Foreign Minister Joseph Wu (吳釗燮), and pay visits to the Mainland Affairs Council, Environmental Protection Administration, and National Health Insurance Administration, among others, it added.

Drew was sworn in on Aug. 6, a day after his St. Kitts and Nevis Labour Party won six of the 11 seats contested in the Aug. 5 general elections, defeating the former ruling coalition and regaining power for the first time since 2015.

According to MOFA, the Republic of China (Taiwan) established diplomatic relations with St. Kitts and Nevis within two weeks of the latter gaining its independence on Sept. 19, 1983, making the ROC the first country to diplomatically recognize the Caribbean state as an independent country.

Other members of Drew's delegation will include Foreign Minister Denzil Douglas, Premier of Nevis island Mark Brantley, Minister of Environment Joyelle Clarke, and Junior Minister for Youth Empowerment and Social Development, Gender Affairs, Aging and Disabilities Isalean Phillip.
