ASE breaks ground on new facility in Malaysia

Taipei, Nov. 10 (CNA) Taiwan's Advanced Semiconductor Engineering, Inc. (ASE), the world's leading provider of semiconductor assembly and test services, held a groundbreaking ceremony Thursday for the construction of a new facility in Penang, Malaysia.

The new ASE Malaysia (ASEM) facility will comprise two buildings (Plants 4 and 5) with a built-up area of 91,231 square meters, located in the Bayan Lepas Free Industrial Zone, ASE said in a statement.

The company is scheduled to complete the construction of the two new plants in 2025 which are expected to create 2,700 jobs, according to ASE.

After construction is completed, ASEM will have 185,806 square meters of floor space, twice the current total.

The company plans to invest US$300 million over a period of five years to expand production, purchase advanced equipment and train more engineers, according to the statement.

The new facility will focus on the production of high-demand packaging products including copper clip and image sensors, it said.

The company will adopt green construction methods that highlight ecological balance, conservation, resource recycling and reuse when building the new plants, it added.

Established in 1991 in Penang, ASEM is a semiconductor manufacturing service provider of assembly packaging and testing solutions to global semiconductor companies and its packaged products are used in a wide range of end applications, including consumer electronics, communication, industrial, automotive and other applications.
