Taipei, Dec. 4 (CNA) Tseng Sheng-guang (曾聖光), a Taiwanese volunteer who died in November while fighting for Ukraine, was honored posthumously at his funeral in Hualien Sunday by the Council of Indigenous Peoples (CIP).

Tseng was honored with the highest class of Contribution to Indigenous Peoples award for his sacrifice in resisting Russia's invasion of Ukraine as well as for democracy, freedom and justice, said CIP chief Icyang Parod in his speech at the funeral.

Hualien County Magistrate Hsu Chen-wei (徐榛蔚), who also attended the event, expressed her condolences over the loss of Tseng, and sympathized with the pain and sadness Tseng's mother and wife must have felt when picking up Tseng's ashes in Ukraine.

She noted that Tseng's father-in-law also died on Nov. 24, dealing his wife another blow, and she said that as a mother she hoped there would be no more unnecessary sacrifices because of the war and that Tseng's family could eventually feel peace of mind.

Tseng, 25, was an Indigenous Amis from Hualien County. He joined the International Legion of Ukraine's territorial defense forces and died on the battlefield in Lyman, part of the contested Luhansk region, making him the first Taiwanese volunteer to die in the ongoing war.

He had previously served in the Republic of China (Taiwan) Army from 2017 to 2021.
