Taipei, Dec. 16 (CNA) The new Nanfang'ao Bridge in Yilan County, built after the previous bridge collapsed in October 2019, killing six, will officially open to traffic on Sunday, the Directorate General of Highways (DGH) said Friday.

After an official ceremony at 9 a.m. and one last safety check, the bridge will open to traffic at 3 p.m., the DGH said in a statement.

The opening of the new bridge -- which was originally slated three months ago -- was delayed when a structural flaw was found.

Construction of the NT$860 million (US$29 million), 796.53-meter bridge started on July 16, 2020 after the previous one collapsed on Oct. 1, 2019, killing six migrant workers from the Philippines and Indonesia, who were onboard fishing boats in the port.

Nine other Philippine and Indonesian migrant workers, one oil tank driver, and three rescue personnel were injured and many other vessels and vehicles damaged in the disaster.
