Taiwan Traditional Theatre Festival returns for its sixth edition with 12 productions

The Taiwan Traditional Theatre Festival (臺灣戲曲藝術節) will return for its sixth edition at the Taiwan Traditional Theatre Center (TTTC) from Apr. 6 to May 28. Under the theme of "Hero · Hyperspace (英雄˙超時空)," 12 performing groups will present 53 rounds of performances including traditional opera and interdisciplinary productions.

For the first time, the 2023 edition will present two flagship productions at the main theater and experimental theater, namely, "Tears of the Phoenix (鳳凰變)," co-created by Shiu-Kim Taiwanese Opera Troupe (秀琴歌劇團) and Our Theatre (阮劇團), as well as "Blood Brothers (壵)" by Jin Kwei Lo Puppetry Company (真快樂掌中劇團). It is also worth mentioning that Co-coism's (明日和合製作所) "Dream of Harmony (和合夢)" will also be presented at the festival, bringing an immersive experience to the audience for the first time.

Other performances at the main theater include National Chinese Orchestra Taiwan's "Journey into Lost Time of TWATUTIA (魔幻時空大稻埕)," GuoGuang Opera Company's "Who's the Hero? (誰是英雄?)," Rom Shing Hakka Opera Troupe's "The Young Hero (少年英雄)," Taiwan Bangzi Opera Company's "Defender (鏢客)," Taipei Li-yuan Peking Opera Theatre's "On stage. Off stage (戲裡戲外)," and Yi-Shin Taiwanese Opera Troupe's "The Plague of Revenge (狩瘟殘書)."

In addition, Approaching theatre (窮劇場) and Gang-a Tsui theatre's (江之翠劇場) collaboration work "Apostating time (感謝公主)," Theatre De La Sardine's (沙丁龐克劇團) "Roaming Hero in Kuanhsi (漂浪英雄走關西)," as well as EX-Theatre Asia's (EX-亞洲劇團) "Karna (कर्ण迦爾納)" will be presented at the experimental theater.

National Center for Traditional Arts (NCTA) director Chen Yue-yi (陳悅宜) stated that the festival enters its sixth edition since its inception in 2018. Despite the impact of COVID-19 pandemic over the past three years, the festival has become an indicative art festival of Taiwanese traditional opera through the joint efforts made by NCTA and participating troupes.
