Taipei, Feb. 11 (CNA) Taiwanese boxer Chen Nien-chin (陳念琴) won gold at the Golden Belt Series Marrakesh 2023 by a unanimous decision over Brazilian boxing star Beatriz Iasmim Soares Ferreira in Morocco on Friday.
The 25-year-old Chen faced Soares, 30, in the women's 63-66KG welter final and secured a 5-0 decision over the 2020 Summer Olympics women's lightweight silver medalist to snag gold at the tournament, which was held Feb. 2-10.
Chen's good performance was also reflected in the lead-up to the final when she bagged another unanimous 5-0 decision over Nadezhda Rya-bets of Kazakhstan in the semifinal.
The two-time Olympian Chen had undergone chemotherapy for Hodgkin's lymphoma. She was diagnosed with the disease in November 2019 and has been in remission since late 2020. She only made her fight against the disease public in October 2021.
Led by coach Ko Wen-ming (柯文明), Chen was one of seven Taiwanese boxers that competed in the tournament in Marrakesh.
Other Taiwanese boxers included 25-year-old Taiwanese standout Wu Shih-yi (吳詩儀), who clinched silver after suffering a 5-0 defeat against Nadezhda Golubeva of Russia in the women's 57-60KG lightweight finals.
The ASBC elite silver medalist and Tokyo Olympian Wu, brushed aside Serbia's Natalia Shadrina, 4-1, in the semifinals leading up to the final for the silver medal finish.
Meanwhile, Taiwan's Liu Chien-ling (劉千綾) also clinched silver after a 5-0 defeat to Kazakh boxer Alua Balkibekova in the women's 45-48KG minimum weight final.
Taiwan's Lin Yu-ting (林郁婷) and Huang Yu-ting (黃于庭) both won bronze in the women's 54-57KG feather weight and women's 60-63KG light welter weight, respectively.
