Taiwan's team to the inaugural Youth Baseball5 Asia Cup on Saturday won the gold medal by defeating China in the final, while also securing a place in the inaugural Youth Baseball5 World Cup.
Organized by the World Baseball Softball Confederation, the mixed-gender 5-player sports event saw Taiwan beat South Korea in the morning to advance to the gold medal game against China in the afternoon.
Taiwan won both matches 2:0, avoiding a deciding game against South Korea and China.
In Taiwan's first match on Saturday, the team scored 11-1 in the first 5-innings game, followed by a 1-0 win in the second 5-innings game.
In the final against China, the scores were 10-5 and 5-4, with Taiwan winning the gold medal and China settling for the silver.
With South Korea beating Malaysia 2:1 in three matches in the third place game, Taiwan, China and South Korea all secured places in the upcoming Youth Baseball5 World Cup, the dates and venue for which have yet to be announced.
The Asia Cup was held indoors at the Grand Ballroom in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia from Feb. 8-11.
Seven teams, Chinese Taipei (Taiwan), Hong Kong, China, South Korea, Malaysia, Singapore and India, played in best-of-three five inning games, with Taiwan winning most of its matches in two games.
The only time Taiwan played three games was on Feb. 10, in a 2:1 win against China.
