Taipei, Feb. 27 (CNA) Guishan Island off the coast of Yilan County will again allow tourists starting in March, the Northeast and Yilan Coast National Scenic Area Administration said Monday.

The island, a maritime ecological park also known as Turtle Mountain Island because of its shape, is closed to the public annually from Dec. 1 to Feb. 28 to allow the local ecology to recuperate.

Starting March 1, up to 1,800 tourists a day will be allowed to visit the island, the administration said.

People who want to go must apply through the administration on a first-come, first-serve basis, according to the agency's website.

Working in collaboration with the Yilan County government, a beach cleanup will be hosted in Guishan on Tuesday before its reopening, the office said, expecting the event to draw about 500 people.

Some 120,000 people visited the island last year.

The administration, meanwhile, reminded visitors not to litter or destroy the local ecology by picking or removing any plants from the island, located about 10 kilometers off the coast of Toucheng Township. It is also the only active volcano in Taiwan.
