Taipei Fashion Week (TFW) AW23 officially kicked off with a grand opening ceremony on March 23 at Nankunshen Daitian Temple (南鯤鯓代天府山門) in Tainan, highlighting a series of fashion designs that incorporate elements from traditional performances such as Ba Jia Jiang (八家將), Taiwanese Opera, and Shadow Puppetry, as well as craftsmanship like lacquer art, paper sculptures, and knotting.

The opening show "Respect the Craftsmanship: The Crossover Fashion of Traditional Performing Art and Traditional Crafts (敬藝:傳統表演藝術及傳統工藝跨界時尚)" began with a traditional folk parade (民俗藝陣) performed by members of the Zhen Shou Temple Wu Jing Tang Folk Parade Club.

In an interview with the Central News Agency, the leader of Zhen Shou Temple Wu Jing Tang Folk Parade Club, Wang Yen-Shou (王延守), stated that the costumes for the models and Ba Jia Jiang members were made in collaboration with Taiwanese designer Bob Jian (簡國彥), using a fresh concept of incorporating vibrant colors and traditional elements.

Addressing the ceremony, Culture Minister Shih Che stated that the five core concepts of the TFW campaign include diversity, humanities, interdisciplinarity, function, and sustainability. The AW23 edition takes the theme of "crossover" as a homage to traditional craft culture. For the first time, the opening show of the event took place in Tainan, which is considered to be the city with the most Taiwanese characteristics, and the Nankunshen Daitian Temple was chosen to represent the cross-border elements of the event.

The Minister pointed out that temples play a crucial role as a local hub for both worship and culture in Taiwan. The practice of performing traditional opera and shadow puppetry as acts of worship can be considered forms of performing arts, while craftsmanship involved in traditional temple painting is a form of visual arts. Stereoscopic crafts like knotting and paper sculptures are the most native forms of Taiwanese art. This fashion show is a moment for Taiwan's cultural power to be recognized by the public.
