Former British Prime Minister Liz Truss has said in Taipei that the West must "get real" on giving support to Taiwan to avoid future conflict with China. Taiwan's main opposition party, the Kuomintang, has named New Taipei Mayor Hou Yu-ih as its presidential candidate for 2024, while former Taipei Mayor Ko Wen-je will run on behalf of his own Taiwan People's Party. Meanwhile, the candidate for the ruling Democratic Progressive Party, Vice President Lai Ching-te, says there is no need for Taiwan to declare formal independence as it is already a sovereign and independent nation.
