Annual Mongolian ceremony showcases Taiwan's diverse cultural heritage

The annual memorial ceremony in tribute to Genghis Khan, the founder and first Khagan of the Mongol Empire, was held on March 10 at the Howard Plaza Hotel Taipei, officiated by the Ministry of Culture. Traditionally, Mongolians uphold the grand ceremony annually on March 21 of the lunar calendar, and this tradition has been observed in Taiwan for 72 years.

Presided by Deputy Minister of Culture Sue Wang (王時思), this year's ceremony was attended by members of the Mongolian hometown association, international students from Mongolia and Mongolian immigrants, and other distinguished guests. The ritual followed ancient traditions, including procedures such as offering flowers, incense, libations, silk, and reading ritual texts in front of the statue of Genghis Khan. The priests adorned themselves in traditional Mongolian attire.

The ceremony featured performances by the Taipei Chinese Orchestra and its choir as well as musicians who played Mongolian traditional musical instruments; Mongolian singers were also invited to showcase the beauty of Mongolian culture by performing traditional songs. These performances aim to promote Mongolian culture to Taiwanese people and highlight Taiwan's abundant and diverse cultural heritage.

MOC stated that the cultural connotation of Mongolia, attributable to its unique natural environment, has thrived on oral histories passed down from generation to generation, and can be seen in the presentation of intangible cultural heritage, laying a foundation for Taiwan's diverse multicultural society.

The MOC pointed out that since the resumption of the memorial ceremony in Taiwan in 1951, it has not only brought together the Mongolian community on the island but has also gradually become a spiritual heritage for Mongolian immigrants in Taiwan. The Ministry will continue to engage in the preservation, research and promotion of Mongolian culture in the future, and the ceremony will be consistently held, with the aim of ensuring that the Mongolian society in Taiwan will continue to preserve and pass down their cultural heritage. This contributes to the long-lasting cultural diversity of Taiwan and bears witness to the growth of multicultural society within Taiwan’s democratic environment.
