Taipei, June 6 (CNA) Taiwan's government will donate US$100,000 to help those impacted by recent flooding in Haiti, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Tuesday.

In a press release, the ministry said the pledged donation was intended to help the people of Haiti resume their normal lives as soon as possible.

The country's embassy in Haiti has been instructed to work with the Haitian government to allocate the donation to relief efforts, the ministry said.

It noted that no known Taiwanese expatriates in Haiti had been injured or killed in the flooding, adding that the embassy would keep in close touch with them to provide necessary assistance.

At least 42 people have been killed and 11 others are missing after a weekend of heavy rainfall flooded more than 13,600 homes and caused landslides, foreign media cited local officials as reporting on Monday.

According to the ministry, the northwestern and southern parts of Haiti have been most severely affected, including the country's capital Port-au-Prince.

Haiti is one of 13 countries to maintain diplomatic relations with the Republic of China, Taiwan's official name. The two established diplomatic ties in 1957.
