Taipei, June 6 (CNA) Korean-language station announcements are to be introduced to 15 stops on the Taipei Metro system amid an increase in tourists from Korea, the Taipei Rapid Transit Corp. (TRTC) said Tuesday.

TRTC said in a statement that according to statistics compiled by the Tourism Bureau between 2018 and March, 2023, visitors from Japan made up the highest population of tourists to Taiwan, followed by travelers from Korea.

The figure revealed that approximately 2.14 million Koreans visited Taiwan between the dates, which prompted TRTC to record Korean station announcements for use in 15 high-volume stops.

According to TRTC, Korean announcements will be introduced at Taipei Main Station, Zhongshan, Dongmen, Taipei 101/World Trade Center, Tamsui, Ximen, Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall, Minquan West Road, Songjiang Nanjing, Zhongxiao Xinsheng, Guting, Nanjing Fuxing, Zhongxiao Fuxing, Daan and Nangang Exhibition Center.

Meanwhile, TRTC said with Japanese tourists making up the largest proportion of inbound travelers to Taiwan, with approximately 3.42 million visiting between 2018 and March 2023, it will update the number of stops with Japanese station announcements from the current 13 to 21.

The eight additional stops are Minquan West Road, Songjiang Nanjing, Zhongxiao Xinsheng, Guting, Nanjing Fuxing, Zhongxiao Fuxing, Daan and Nangang Exhibition Center.

TRTC said all Korean language additions and Japanese language updates will gradually roll out and be most likely completed at the end of August.

After August, TRTC said station announcements will be made in Mandarin and then foreign languages -- with English in all stations and Japanese and Korean at designated stops -- followed by Taiwanese Hokklo and Hakka.

Visual stop displays will be presented in Chinese and English, TRTC said, adding that the company will continue collecting tourist statistics to continue improving its services to tailor to international visitors.
