Young adults between the age of 18 and 21 will receive 1200 "culture points" to spend on arts and cultural activities, the Ministry of Culture announced in February this year. Starting today, the digital points can be redeemed via the "Culture Points (文化幣)" app to purchase tickets for Taiwanese films, live performances, exhibitions, buy cultural products and more.
The dedicated app is a comprehensive platform that allows users to make points-based transactions as well as find information about cultural events and venues. To maximize the benefits of the "coming-of-age vouchers," the MOC would also offer additional incentives including one extra free point for every two points spent at independent bookstores; discount of 50% or more on exclusive seats for youths at performing arts venues; and exclusive promotions for purchasing movie tickets for domestic films. In addition, with a minimum spend of 200 points per transaction, users will be eligible to participate in a lucky draw. A total of 200,000 sets of points will be given out, with the highest prize being 500 points. The points will remain valid until June 30 next year.
According to the MOC, Culture Minister Shih Che proposed to expand the coverage of the initiative to age 21 immediately after taking office. Since February, the Minister has routinely hosted meetings to ensure that the policy and the layout of the entire system are well-designed and easy to navigate, so as to provide a pleasurable experience for the users. A thorough testing process was conducted in schools prior to the launch of the app and was given the green light upon achieving a 92% satisfaction rate.
