Taipei, July 11 (CNA) Taiwanese students won three gold medals and one silver at the 2023 International Biology Olympiad (IBO), held in the United Arab Emirates, putting their team in third place overall, the Ministry of Education (MOE) said Tuesday.

Singapore and India tied for the top spot with both winning four gold medals during the July 2-11 event, according to the IBO, which had a total of 320 participants from 80 countries.

The Taiwanese team, which first took part in the IBO in 1999, was represented this year by four high school students selected out of 3,504 students from 166 schools in Taiwan, the ministry said.

The gold medalists were Wang Po-hsiang (王柏翔) of Taipei Municipal Jianguo High School, Lin Hsuan-ming (林軒名) of National Tainan First Senior High School, and Kuo Chen-chang (郭宸彰) of Taichung Municipal Taichung First Senior High School, while Jianguo student Lee Yen-wei (李彥緯) won a silver medal.

In the individual category, Wang finished in 11th place globally, which was the best performance by a Taiwanese student this year, the ministry said.

Gold medal winners will each get a NT$200,000 (US$6,808) award from the MOE, while the silver medal recipient will receive NT$100,000.
