A marching band consisting of high school students won second place at the World Association of Marching Show Bands (WAMSB) World Championships in the U.S. state of West Virginia Saturday, as well as picking up numerous other accolades, the band's parents support group said.
The sole team from Taiwan was comprised of 70 band members, with 44 of the students from Taipei Municipal Chien Kuo High School and the remainder from other high schools in Taipei.
Centered around the theme of "Home Is Where the Heart Is," the team's performance combined "The Show Must Go On" by Queen with other pieces of music, such as Antonin Dvorak's Symphony No. 9 in E minor, the support group said.
The team advanced to the final on Saturday after succeeding in the preliminary round Friday, along with other nine teams from countries including Canada, the United States and Germany.
In the final the team scored 95.861 points, putting them in second place, one point behind the winning Canadian team, the support group said.
The Taiwanese team was also presented with a "Gold with Honors" award -- given to teams that score more than 95 points -- the group said, adding that it was also victorious in the "Street Parade" and "Best Auxiliary" categories, and was runner up in the "Best Drum Major" category.
