Taipei, July 29 (CNA) Taiwan took home three silvers and three bronzes on the first day of the 31st Summer Universiade in Chengdu, China Saturday, with wushu, judo, shooting and taekwondo athletes among those winning medals.

Taiwan's first medal of the games was won by Sun Chia-hung (孫家閎), who clinched second in the men's Taijijian, a martial arts discipline featuring a double-edged sword.

Hu Tzu-hsuan (胡子萱) also scored silver for Taiwan in the women's individual poomsae, a taekwondo discipline featuring a series of attack and defense forms.

A score of 6.38 for the 22-year-old Hu, who won gold at the 2018 World Taekwondo Poomsae Championships, saw her finish second to Yeaeun Cha of South Korea with 6.42.

Adding to the podium finishes, markswoman Chen Yu-ju (陳俞如) won bronze in the women's 10-meter air pistol event, scoring 215 to finish behind Manu Bhaker of India (239.7) and Sara Fabian of Hungary (235.3).

Chen went into the final, which saw the lowest-placed finisher eliminated over seven rounds, as an underdog after ranking eighth out of 45 shooters in the qualification.

Chen's coach, Chen Chiu-yen (陳秋燕), told CNA after the game that things had come up roses for the player in the final.

"Yu-ju was a little off at the beginning of the qualification so that she struggled to find form..., but we knew that she was not playing her level," the coach said, calling the shooter a "rising star" with great potential in the sport.

Taiwan added another two medals with third-place finishes for Lin Chien-hsi (林千禧) and Chen Yue-xi (陳岳禧) in the changquan event, a "long fist" wushu discipline.

Lin scored a total of 9.453 points in the women's changquan event to finish behind Moka Furukawa of Japan with 9.596 points and Nandhira Mauriskha of Indonesia with 9.600 points.

Chen, meanwhile, finished behind second-place Edgar Xavier Marvelo of Indonesia and gold medalist Jin Zhedian of China

Also on Saturday, Taiwanese Olympic judo medalist Yang Yung-wei (楊勇緯) took home silver in the men's under-60 kilogram category.

The 25-year-old world No. 5 lost to Taiki Nakamura of Japan on a "katame-waza," after Nakamura held Yang down for 20 seconds.

Taiwan has 210 athletes competing in 16 sports at the 31st Summer Universiade, which takes place in Chengdu from July 28 to Aug. 8.
