Taipei, Aug. 27 (CNA) Taiwan's largest common salt producer on Sunday called for calm after Japan's release of treated radioactive wastewater from the Fukushima nuclear plant into the ocean sparked panic buying in China and South Korea.
Taiyen Biotech Co., Ltd. reassured the public that its supply is ample, stressing that panic buying is unnecessary.
The company said its Tung-Hsiao Electrodialysis Refined Salt Factory was designed to meet the country's annual salt demand of 100,000 tons, and despite a reduction of 30,000 tons after the state-run company went privatized in 1995, it is able to cope with extra demand.
Current salt supply also remains normal, although the Ghost Festival on Aug. 30 has driven up demand recently, the company added.
The Japanese government started to release treated radioactive water into the ocean from Fukushima on Aug. 24, prompting panic buying of sea salt in countries such as South Korea and China.
