Taipei, Dec. 2 (CNA) Taiwanese badminton player Chi Yu-jen (戚又仁) bested his compatriot to clinch a slot in the men's singles semifinals at the Syed Modi India International in Lucknow on Friday.

The 26-year-old Chi, currently ranked 48th in the world, defeated Lee Chia-hao (李佳豪) 21-12, 13-21, 21-13 in a 62-minute match at the Babu Banarasi Das Indoor Stadium.

The two Taiwanese shuttlers had gone head-to-head for the first time in the quarterfinals of the Thailand Open in May, with the 24-year-old Lee winning the match in two straight games to advance to the finals.

At the tournament in India on Friday, Chi and Lee were evenly matched in the first two games, tying at 1-1. In the third game, however, Chi took an early 10-4 lead, then went on to win 21-13, sealing the match.

He will next play world No. 31 Priyanshu Rajawat of India later Saturday.

In the women's singles, Taiwanese Hsu Wen-chi (許玟琪) will come up against Line Højmark Kjaersfeldt of Denmark in the semifinals on Saturday.

The Syed Modi India International is the 34th tournament of the 2023 Badminton World Federation (BWF) World Tour and a Super 300 event, which is being held until Sunday.
