Did You Know That…?

Accompanying her father, Chen Wei-ling frequented the cinema when she was young. This experience inadvertently sparked her passion for video creation.

Born in 1975, Chen Wei-ling studied mass communication at Tamkang University during the early 1990s. After graduating from the university, she worked as an entertainment reporter and then changed her track to writing, directing, and producing television programs. In 2008, she won the Golden Bell Award for Best Directing for a Television Series with Da Ai Drama (大愛劇場) – “Gold Line (黃金線),” along with the Editing Award and the Mini-series/movie Screenplay Award with “Talking With Your Boyfriend's Ex-Girlfriend (與男友的前女友密談).” She won the directing award again with “Year of the Rain (那年,雨不停國)” in 2010 and “On Children (你的孩子不是你的孩子)” in 2019.

Chen’s representative works are “Autumn’s Concerto (下一站,幸福),” “On Children,” and “Mom, Don’t Do That! (媽,別鬧了!).” “Autumn’s Concerto” appears to be a cliché romantic drama, but Chen was able to create vivid characters by imbuing complex emotions, achieving a high viewer rating upon release in 2009. “On Children” is an adapted story focusing on parent-child relationships and presented with sci-fi elements. It mocks the education system in Taiwan that promotes unhealthy parent-child interactions and was regarded as Taiwan’s “Black Mirror,” a popular British sci-fi television series. “Mom, Don’t Do That!” tells the story of a 60-year-old widow who seeks a new relationship, but is worried by her two daughters. Each on their own, they then embarked on a journey to love, which is sometimes ridiculous yet warm-hearted.
