MOC holds special screening of documentary ‘In Search of a Mixed Identity’

The Ministry of Culture organized a special screening of the documentary “In Search of a Mixed Identity (尋找湯德章)” in Taipei on Mar. 20. The documentary recounts the life of Tang Te-chang (湯德章), a human rights lawyer who was executed in the aftermath of the February 28 incident in 1947, an anti-government uprising that was brutally suppressed by the KMT.

Culture Minister Shih Che remarked that Huang Ming-cheng (黃銘正) and Lien Chen-hui (連楨惠), the directors of the documentary, spent five years producing and shooting the film. Through the production team’s hard work, he expressed his hope that the viewers could be inspired to further discover the history of the island.

Director Huang Ming-cheng highlighted that the story is not just about the incident in 1947 but also a journey on cultural identity. Through the documentary, he aspires to lead people to reflect on the circumstances faced by contemporary Taiwanese society.

Born to a Japanese father and Taiwanese mother in 1907 in Tainan, Tang Te-chang, a policeman-turned lawyer, was arrested by the National Revolutionary Army for the crime of rebellion in March 1947. He was interrogated by the authorities with regard to his ancestry and executed on March 13 of the same year.
