Taipei, May 20 (CNA) Celebrations were held to mark the inauguration of Lai Ching-te (賴清德) as the fifth directly elected president of the Republic of China, Taiwan's official name, including street performances and a military display in Taipei on Monday morning.

The series of events scheduled for the inauguration day began at 9 a.m., when the official swearing-in ceremony takes place at the Presidential Office in Taipei.

Performances organized by the General Association of Chinese Culture then took place on Chongqing South Road in front of the Presidential Office building, followed by a military gun salute and the singing of the national anthem at 10:55 a.m., after which Lai will deliver his inauguration address.

The morning's celebrations concluded with a fly-past by the Air Force's Thunder Tigers Aerobatic Team.

An inauguration day state banquet will start at 6:30 p.m. in Tainan, southern Taiwan, where Lai served as mayor from 2010-2017.
