The 2024 WMACS Leadership Development for Young Professionals program, sponsored by the Washington Metropolitan Association of Chinese Schools (WMACS), has made a significant leap in enhancing the leadership skills of young professionals in the greater Washington DC area. Most of these young professionals come from Taiwanese immigrant families. The program has always fostered a mentorship environment where experienced counselors guide newcomers.

Running from June 2024 for seven weeks, the event included comprehensive orientation and leadership training sessions and a 3-day retreat specifically designed for young professionals. The retreat aimed to equip them not only with the skills to be effective counselors for the upcoming WMACS summer camp event but also to become confident leaders. Key topics covered were confidence building, effective communication and collaboration in team settings, proper documentation for activity and class planning, and strategies for working with children of various age groups.

For many new counselors, this retreat marked their first venture into the leadership program. The program emphasized the importance of effective communication within a large team of 17 members, ensuring that every voice is heard. Through thoughtful discussions, the retreat provided valuable insights from both the perspectives of meeting leaders and attendees, boosting the confidence of even the most soft-spoken counselors.

The initiative has been well-received, with new counselors expressing appreciation for the guidance and support provided. This proactive approach not only prepares them for their roles but also sets a strong foundation for future leadership within the program. The program concluded with a closing ceremony on August 15th to celebrate the graduation of the participants, marking the end of a successful and enriching experience.
