On December 25, 1924, the Kaohsiung Municipal Government was officially founded, signifying a new era in which Kaohsiung became an autonomous city that independently managed its finances. Over the past century, Kaohsiung has transformed from a harbor city into an industrial metropolis. Currently, it is the most important metropolitan area in Southern Taiwan. The question is: What contributed to Kaohsiung’s expansion? The answer can be found in the “industries” that developed during multiple stages of Kaohsiung’s growth. These industries have effectively promoted Kaohsiung’s economy, created job opportunities, and boosted domestic demand. To begin with, the logistics infrastructure laid the foundation for the city’s development. Later, the chemical industry, the petrochemical industry, the export processing zones, heavy industry, and more recently, the technology industry, have all provided momentum for the growth of both regular and unique tertiary industries.
Industries and their respective workers shape the characteristics of the city. The people who have gathered here from around Taiwan and worked in various industries have provided the impetus for the city’s development; as locals, they have also helped shape the City of Kaohsiung. As we celebrate the city’s 100th anniversary, we would like to express our appreciation to these unsung heroes who have contributed to Kaohsiung. Among all the complex industries, we have chosen 19 industries and their respective workers, grouping them into two general categories: those associated with exports and those supplying labor for the city’s internal demands. Through brief introductions to these industries and workers, presented in the form of images and physical exhibits, we would like to pay respect to the hard work of these numerous workers.
