Taipei, Feb. 17 (CNA) Taiwan's semiconductor output value exceeded NT$5 trillion for the first time in 2024, reaching NT$5.32 trillion (US$152.69 billion), up 22.4 percent from a year earlier, according to statistics released by the Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI).
Within the chip industry, the IC manufacturing segment recorded the best performance in 2024, with production value rising 28.4 percent from the previous year to NT$3.42 trillion, the ITRI said.
Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC, 台積電), the world's largest contract chipmaker, reported record high annual revenue of NT$2.89 trillion for 2024, driven by growth in high-performance computing and smartphones, making the company the main contributor to the growth of the IC manufacturing industry.
The local IC design industry posted NT$1.27 trillion in production value for 2024, up 16 percent year-on-year. Meanwhile, the IC packaging sector registered NT$423.3 billion, up 7.7 percent year-on-year, and the IC testing industry saw an increase of 5 percent to NT$200.2 billion year-on-year.
In 2025, the local semiconductor industry is expected to pass the NT$6 trillion mark and post NT$6.18 trillion in production value, up 16.2 percent year-on-year, according to the ITRI.
Within the semiconductor industry, IC manufacturing output value is expected to reach NT$4.83 trillion in 2025, up 19.4 percent year-on-year, while the IC packaging segment's production value will increase 8.9 percent to NT$460.8 billion.
The ITRI also forecast that the IC testing segment's output value will reach NT$219.5 billion in 2025, up 9.6 percent from a year earlier.
Taiwan's semiconductor output value growth in 2024 was higher than the 19.1 percent growth in global semiconductor production value. In 2025, growth in local semiconductor output value growth will again be higher than predicted global growth of 11.2 percent, according to the ITRI.
