Washington, April 2 (CNA) U.S. President Donald Trump on Wednesday announced sweeping "reciprocal tariffs" on U.S. trading partners, including a 32 percent tax on goods from Taiwan that is set to take effect on April 9.

At a Rose Garden event, Trump declared a 10% baseline tax on imports from all countries, with the White House saying it would take effect on April 5. Countries with larger trade surpluses with the United States will face higher duties beginning April 9, including Taiwan (32%), China (34%), Japan (24%), South Korea (26%), Vietnam (46%) and Thailand (37%).

The White House said the tariffs aim to address "the injustices of global trade, reshore manufacturing and drive economic growth for the American people," but economic experts have warned that the measures could spark a trade war, exacerbate inflation and disrupt international trade.
