On June 8, the Albany chapter of the Formosa Association of Student Cultural Ambassadors (FASCA) hosted a lively cultural event titled “Taiwanese Gourmet Food: Boba Tea.” This hands-on workshop was planned and led by FASCA student members, offering participants a chance to experience both the flavors and the fun of Taiwanese culinary culture. The event combined education, entertainment, and cultural exchange in a way that left a lasting impression on everyone involved.

The event was hosted by Justin Jian and Flora Wu, both vice presidents of the Albany FASCA chapter. In preparation, the student leaders worked diligently to research recipes, develop a budget, organize materials, and prepare a live demonstration. Their efforts showcased the group’s strong sense of leadership and teamwork. Each member of the FASCA team played a role in ensuring the event’s success.

To begin the workshop, the student team gave a presentation on the cultural origins and global popularity of bubble tea, also known as boba. This segment provided participants with a deeper understanding of bubble tea’s Taiwanese roots, its evolution, and how it became a global phenomenon. The presentation also included information on kitchen safety and hygiene, ensuring that all participants could enjoy the activity in a clean and safe environment. This was especially important, as many attendees were new to cooking and working with ingredients like tapioca pearls, which require careful handling to achieve the right texture.

Following the presentation, team members led a step-by-step demonstration on how to make classic boba milk tea. Participants mixed ingredients, shaped the tapioca dough, and experimented with the size and form of the pearls. They also learned techniques for cooking the pearls properly and customizing their drinks. Each participant had the opportunity to make their own boba drink using the provided ingredients.

“I always thought making boba would be complicated,” one student participant said. “But the process was surprisingly simple and really fun. It also tasted just like the ones you buy at a store.”

Throughout the event, the room was filled with laughter, excitement, and the rich aroma of tea. The FASCA team’s communication, collaboration, and enthusiasm made the activity both educational and enjoyable. The interactive nature of the event fostered a sense of community as participants worked side by side, gaining new skills and a deeper appreciation for Taiwanese food culture.

The workshop also highlighted the value of youth leadership. Student members took charge of every stage—from planning to execution—demonstrating initiative, creativity, and teamwork. This hands-on experience allowed them to build leadership and organizational skills in a real-world context.

Beyond culinary techniques, the event celebrated Taiwanese identity and heritage. It brought students and families together to appreciate the flavors and traditions of Taiwan. Many participants expressed their gratitude for the opportunity to connect with their cultural roots in a fun and meaningful way.

Encouraged by the positive feedback, the Albany FASCA team looks forward to hosting more cultural events that promote Taiwan’s rich heritage and empower young leaders. These events not only foster cultural awareness but also give youth a platform to showcase their talents and develop essential life skills. By continuing to create these opportunities, FASCA helps ensure that the next generation of Taiwanese Americans stays connected to their heritage while gaining the tools to thrive in a global society.
